Maginot Line - Ouvrage du Four a Chaux - Waltzing Broomhilda

Located just south of the village of Lembach. The line, a system of fortifications along France's eastern frontier, from the Swiss to the Belgian borders, was named for Andre Maginot, French Minister of War from 1929 to 1932. Considered impregnable, it was still incomplete at the outbreak of World War II in 1939 and its effectiveness was never tested. The line was flanked by the Germans in their sweep into France and played only a marginal role in a campaign that ended with the collapse of France in 1940. Today several of the fortifications can still be visited. The Four-a-Chaux Fortification in Lembach, northern Alsace, was built as an underground city between 1930 and 1945 and was occupied in 1938. It was attacked by 27 Stuka dive bombers on June 19, 1940, and was surrendered to the Germans, who occupied it until 1944. A major restoration of the fort was carried out from 1951 to 1953 and it was opened to the public in 1983.
